Having a cold always seems like a slide into murkiness – unneeded, unnecessary – simply a lack of control at the helm. And that’s what this feels like. Some people think a cold signifies a being who had too much going on at once, where things got overcrowded and something had to give. So what does give is of course the sinuses, and the swallowing ability as a throat turns scratchy and uncomfortable. It’s difficult not to feel a bit sorry for yourself when your life is bounded by damp tissues. And there’s always the hope that someone else will make soup.
